I post there much more often than I post here. It’s harder to exclusively post about languages and linguistics with my attention span.

What does English sound like to foreign ears?

We’ve all heard examples of fake Chinese or German from speakers who lack familiarity with either language. While typically cringe-worthy, these examples do raise interesting questions regarding our own language. What does English sound like to non-English speakers?

Handwriting Challenge, revisited

I took a step back and took an objective look at doing the handwriting challenge, and I came to the conclusion that it doesn’t fit into the languages and linguistics niche I write in. Therefore, I will not be continuing the challenge for that reason.

Stay tuned for more relevant posts!

My expectations in playing this “game” must have been fairly low, because I was impressed with my score (which was, unfortunately, below average). Oh well! I’m still new at this.

It’s fun nonetheless, and allows you to become familiarized with a handful of written foreign languages.

I scored 17/30!

Signing Savvy

linguistical:

Are you savvy with your signing? Because if you aren’t (and even if you are), this website will be of big help. Such a cool idea.

I’ve been signing for 3 years, and I never knew this resource existed. Very good find, linguistical!

I’m musing getting a government loan/bursary and getting a BA in Linguistics with modern Chinese language and culture as a minor. The reasons are simple: a) I love linguistics; b) I love the Chinese language in all its forms and dialects; c) Extensive enough knowledge of Mandarin Chinese can almost guarantee me a job anywhere in the tourism/translation fields, and; d) Chinese universities, such as Hunan U in south-central China, always look to hire English-speaking teachers for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classes.

But most important of all: I’m sick of not being in school.

Then again, where does that leave the past three years studying American Sign Language? I love that, too, and the culture surrounding it. A career was supposed to come out of that…
